Meeting July 23, 2013
Minutes

Present:  Chairperson Barbara Swartz, Sam Fiori, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Marcia Lambert, Lisa Lyons, Bev Moustakis, Barbara Sirois,  Sandra Power, Judith Wolfe, Ellen Talkowsky   Visitor:  Claudia

Meeting was called to order at 7:38 P.M.  

Minutes of the Meeting of June 25, 2013, were reviewed and amended as follows:
    1) The name of the military service island is “Active Duty Service Island.” ~
    2) Paragraph 2 is amended to clarify that seven of the maintained Traffic Islands need
         sponsors.
The Minutes were approved as amended.

(1).  Salem Public spaces: presentation on a project in the Point neighborhood.  Claudia Paraschiv introduced the Committee to a Public Spaces project being developed in the Point.  The project is focused on improving a now vacant lot on Palmer Street so that it may become a community centerpiece.  A model of the lot and surrounding area was presented.  Project developers are looking for assistance in “greening” the lot and helping with the financing of the project and future partnerships.  The creation of a sixty four foot chalkboard available for noting suggestions for improvements to the Point is envisioned.  The Committee has been asked to help with the “greening” of the lot.  The Committee asked that we be kept posted as to project’s progress.

(2).  Traffic Island/Window box competition awards ceremony:  Judging occurs 7/27-7/29.  An award ceremony is to be held Thursday, August 8th, 5:30 P.M. at the Brook Hose.  The event is co-sponsored with the Garden Club.   Lisa was asked to take pictures of the islands and make a slide show.  The Garden Club will take pictures of the window boxes.  Ellen is to get frames for the certificates.  Committee  members will help assemble the documents.  Sandi will notify and invite traffic island sponsors and volunteers to the event.   

(3).  Lady of Salem update/Salem Maritime Festival, August 3rd, 12n-4pm:  Fourteen “Ladies” are now on display.  A Salem Inn “Lady” and a Tavern in the Square “Lady” are being finished.
A review of the July 4th “Lady of Salem” poster crayon coloring event held on the waterfront was  presented.  The event was a success.  News of the “Ladies” was in the news on Salem Patch  and in the Salem News.  Mary Ellen is working on a story for the Salem Life magazine.  Some 1000 “Lady” cards have been distributed to many sites.  A QR code is downloaded.  Events were not scheduled for Heritage Days as the focus was placed on the Trails and Sails event scheduled for September 21st.


(4).  Traffic Island update:  New Sponsor/Active Duty Service Island/Conclusion of Sandi’s report.  
        Committee members will volunteer and take turns in maintaining and cleaning the  Active Duty Service Island.  Note was taken that the island’s military flags have disappeared.  Efforts have been made to engage sponsors for the unsponsored traffic islands.  Problems with the plants on some islands and refuse left by passersby were noted.  Efforts to get and award volunteers were discussed.

6) ~Old Business, New Business, items for the next meeting/Next meeting is August 27th: Ellen asked for volunteers to help on August 6th and will send notices.

A Motion to adjourn was proposed and allowed.  The meeting adjourned at 9:04 P.M.
